Insider Tip: Take note of the the tiny family cemetery located adjacent to Mirror Lake’s property. You can park and walk the short distance to the family plots in the middle of the farm field and, from there, observe nesting ospreys. These beautiful birds, also called “river hawks”, have multiple nests in the immediate area, one on the frame of a power line structure not far from the cemetery. Bring your binoculars and, please, don’t go past the cemetery. Respect the private property that surrounds.

The serene Chain O’Lakes State Park was aptly named. There, you can paddle through a connected chain of nine kettle lakes, hike 23 miles of forested trails, fish (electric-motors-only), swim, visit the park’s one-room schoolhouse (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) and learn about native wildlife at the nature center at Sand Lake beach. Other facilities available for visitors include the campground, cabins, and multiple picnic shelters. Drive just four miles north to enjoy historic downtown Albion, full of charm!
Insider Tip: Albion Ale House serves up a dozen in-house brewed, craft beers and delicious food with dine-in and carry-out options. Walk a block to the courthouse square and explore one of Indiana’s “Top 10 Best Main Streets” as determined by VisitIndiana.com readers. (You must be 21-years or older to enter the Albion Ale House.)

Insider Tip: Rome City was the site of Chautauqua from 1876-1906 and home to Gene Stratton-Porter, an author, naturalist, photographer, and silent movie-era producer. Be sure to explore the community, historic markers, and Stratton-Porters home, the Cabin at Wildflower Woods, while visiting.
